Why a good base layer improves your performance

Many cyclists invest carefully in their cycling jersey and bib shorts, but pay little attention to the layer underneath. That's a shame, because the right cycling base layer makes a world of difference. After all, it determines whether you arrive clammy or dry, and whether your body stays at the right temperature on colder rides.

A technical base layer has one main job: moving sweat away from your skin to the outer layer as quickly as possible. This keeps your skin dry during intense efforts, and you cool down much less quickly when your pace drops or you stop for a moment.

Thermal undershirts and cycling underwear for men

An undershirt is always worn directly against the skin under your cycling jersey. At Acelera, you'll find lightweight summer versions for optimal moisture management on warm days, and thermal versions for rides at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. The thermal version has a brushed interior that retains body heat exceptionally well.

Besides shirts, the right men's cycling underwear is also important for riding comfort. For cyclists who don't ride in tight bib shorts but in, for example, loose athletic shorts or casual clothing, men's padded cycling underwear is the perfect solution. You wear these men's cycling briefs or cycling boxers discreetly under your regular pants, while the built-in chamois protects you against saddle pain.

Choosing the right base layer by temperature

Which base layer suits your ride depends on the conditions:

  • Above 15 degrees Celsius
Choose a thin, sleeveless base layer for maximum moisture wicking, or on very hot days ride directly in a highly breathable summer jersey.
  • Between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius
A lightweight long- or short-sleeve base layer gives you just that little bit of extra warmth on chilly mornings, and wicks sweat away effectively once you warm up.
  • Below 10 degrees Celsius
A thermal base layer is essential. Combined with a thermal cycling jersey and a windproof cycling jacket, it forms the ideal three-layer system for winter.

Tips to prevent saddle pain

Never wear cotton underwear under your cycling shorts or cycling underwear. Cotton retains moisture, stays wet against your skin and causes friction in sensitive areas. Want to prevent saddle pain effectively? Always choose padded cycling underwear or bib shorts worn directly against the skin, supplemented with a soothing chamois cream for very long rides if needed.
