cycling clothing set for men

Whether you're just getting into road cycling or already have plenty of miles in your legs, a complete cycling clothing set for men is an essential part of your kit. In this blog, we explain what a cycling clothing set consists of and the function of each item. Of course, some parts of a cycling clothing set are seasonal, for example a jacket is often unnecessary in summer. If you're looking for tips on which clothing you need for each season, read our blog about clothing for every season. The blog is structured the way we would dress ourselves, starting with a base layer.

Base Layer / base layer

Every kit starts with a base layer. This layer sits comfortably yet fairly close to the body. The base layer is designed to absorb moisture quickly and move it away. A good base layer keeps you dry and gives you that little bit of extra warmth when it's slightly cooler. For example, during a descent. For these reasons, a base layer is an important part of a cycling clothing set.

Bib shorts

Once you've put on a good base layer, it's time for perhaps the most important part of your cycling clothing set: the bib shorts. Bib shorts let you sit comfortably in the saddle and provide lasting support during your rides. They also support the leg muscles and help stimulate circulation. Want to know more about choosing the right bib shorts? Then read our tips for buying the right bib shorts. To keep riding all year round, we recommend making long tights part of your cycling clothing set outside of summer.

Cycling jersey

Now that you're wearing a base layer and bib shorts, your cycling clothing set is already starting to come together. Now it's time to put on a good cycling jersey. A cycling jersey, also called a cycling jersey, has several functions. First of all, a good cycling jersey helps regulate moisture management and body temperature. This helps prevent you from overheating or ending up drenched in sweat while riding. In addition, a cycling jersey protects you from the sun with effective UV protection. A good cycling jersey also adds comfort, with a smooth zip that's easy to operate with one hand and practical rear pockets.

Jacket

Unfortunately for us in the Netherlands, a jacket is something we really need. While in many countries a windstopper will be enough, in the Netherlands there's no getting around buying a warm jacket to complete your cycling clothing set. A jacket offers the best protection against the cold and the occasional shower.

Shoes & socks

Of course, you need the right shoes to complete your cycling clothing kit. Shoes are the contact point between your body and the bike, so they need to fit snugly to help you transfer power as efficiently as possible. In our view, a road bike without clipless pedals is a no-go. With clipless pedals, power transfer to the bike is up to 20% more efficient. cycling socks play a supporting role here. They’re often thin, help prevent blisters while riding, and stimulate circulation all the way to your toes. So they’re an essential part of your cycling clothing kit.

Helmet  & glasses

Safety comes first. Although that’s a statement the Tour de France seems to forget from time to time, we think it really matters. The function of a helmet speaks for itself: it protects your head from impacts and crashes. But the role of a good pair of glasses is often underestimated. Good glasses provide clear vision, helping you spot dirt and objects on the road earlier so you can react in time. They also protect your eyes from debris and flies. Because as beautiful as the Dutch polder landscape is, you’ll run into those annoying little bugs everywhere. Always wear your glasses with the arms over your helmet straps, as this allows them to spring away from your face in the event of a crash, which can help prevent eye injuries.

Even more accessories...

Of course, there are more items you can add to your cycling clothing kit, such as arm warmers, leg warmers, gloves, and supplements. Everyone has their own preferences, but we think these pieces give you a pretty complete cycling clothing kit that will keep you riding through a large part of the year. Feeling inspired?
