Why a good base layer improves your performance

Many cyclists carefully invest in their cycling jersey and bibshorts, but pay little attention to the layer underneath. That’s a shame, because the right base layer makes a huge difference when cycling. It determines whether you arrive clammy or dry, and whether your body stays at the right temperature during colder rides.

A technical base layer has one main job: to move sweat away from your skin to the outer clothing layer as quickly as possible. This keeps your skin dry during intense efforts, and you cool down much less quickly when your pace drops or you stop for a moment.

Thermal undershirts and cycling underwear for men

You always wear an undershirt directly against your skin under your cycling jersey. At Acelera, you’ll find lightweight summer versions for optimal moisture management on warm days, as well as thermal versions for rides in temperatures below ten degrees. The thermal version has a brushed inner side that retains body heat exceptionally well.

The right cycling underwear for men is also important for riding comfort. For cyclists who don’t ride in tight bibshorts but, for example, wear loose sports shorts or casual clothing, cycling underwear with a chamois for men is the perfect solution. You can wear these cycling briefs or cycling boxers for men discreetly under your regular trousers, while the built-in chamois protects you from saddle soreness.

Choosing the right base layer for the temperature

Which base layer is right for your ride depends on the conditions:

  • Above 15 degrees
Choose a thin, sleeveless base layer for maximum moisture wicking, or on very warm days, ride directly in a well-breathable summer jersey.
  • Between 10 and 15 degrees
A lightweight base layer with long or short sleeves adds just a little extra warmth on chilly mornings and transports sweat effectively once you warm up.
  • Below 10 degrees
A thermal base layer is essential. Combined with a thermal cycling jersey and a windproof cycling jacket, it forms the ideal three-layer system for winter.

Tips to prevent saddle soreness

Never wear cotton underwear under your cycling shorts or cycling underwear. Cotton holds moisture, stays wet against your skin and causes chafing in sensitive areas. Want to effectively prevent saddle soreness? Always choose cycling underwear with a chamois or wear bibshorts directly against your skin, optionally combined with a nourishing chamois cream for very long rides.
